Position Summary

Working with the Lead Cook and based on guidelines from a Kitchen supervisor, the Cook will plan for and prepare three daily nutritious meals and one snack for the residents. The Cook will also maintain the cleanliness and sanitation of all food preparation areas. Additionally, the Cook will assist with ordering and inventory. In addition, we also transport meal to our Hope Harbor Watts location.

Essential Functions

  • Prepare daily meals and snacks for residents.
  • Responsible for the quality and presentation of the meals.
  • Follow the preset, posted menus, respecting various meal times so that no more than 15 hours elapse between dinner and breakfast the next day.
  • If needed, prepare modified meals according to Dietician's guidelines and Physician's orders for individual residents.
  • Responsible for effective time management to ensure quality control, cleanliness, and sanitation, following the Health Department time and temperature guidelines.
  • Responsible for effective food preparation and portioning for cost control.
  • Must keep all food preparation areas and equipment clean and sanitary.
  • Maintain sinks and floor drains clean and free of all debris.
  • Organize and rotate storage, using F.I.F.0. method.
  • Monitor equipment temperature as well as holding temperature. Report any discrepancy to Supervisor immediately.
  • Maintain regular inventory. Provide Supervisor with a list of items to be ordered weekly, including disposable wares and cleaning supplies.
  • Responsible for receiving and organizing deliveries.
  • Attend scheduled workshops and staff meeting as requested by the Supervisor.
  • Maintain good working relations with all members of the staff, The Salvation Army representatives, volunteers, and visitors from other agencies.
  • Responsible for performing other duties as assigned by management.
  • Perform all duties with courtesy and respect, maintaining a healthy relationship with the staff and clients.
  • Follow weekly schedule and perform all other duties as assigned by Operations Manager or Director.

Working Conditions

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, fax and telephone. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Health Dept. sanitation.
  • Must be a certified food handler under the California Safety Code 97-0071.
  • Must have work experience in kitchen/food service (knife skills, cooking skills and working with large equipment).
  • Microsoft Office applications, email, work and excel a must.
  • Must be TB cleared prior to working and possess a CPR and First Aid Certificates.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

  • Ability to place orders and calculate inventories for production.
  • Culturally sensitive and Service minded and able to function in a multi-facility environment.
  • Excellent communication skills for daily interaction internal/external customers and supporting staff. at the various departments.
  • Ability to organize time, priorities and schedules and adhere to the monthly calendar deadlines.
  • Strong work ethic, high output in service delivery, able to complete tasks well and efficiently.
  • Must be able to pass background check.

Experience In Kitchen/Food Service (Knife Skills, Cooking Skills, and Working With Large Equipment). (required)

Licenses & Certifications
TB cleared certificate (required)
Food Handler's Card (required)
